5 healthy & delicious vegan snacks

Finding a snack that is healthy, vegan and satisfying, can sometimes be a challenge. Luckily we have some great ideas for you.

Here's a list of our top 5 favourite snacks that will never disappoint.

The beauty of these snacks is they're for all diets and great for children.

They can be rustled up very quickly, saving you time and energy, and they're nutritious and filling, providing sustained energy for long and busy days.

The best part is you will very likely already have some of these ingredients in the kitchen. Simple, outrageously delicious and just happen to be vegan.

Hummus and veg sticks

Carrot, celery and red pepper sticks dipped in hummus are a very satisfying and nutritious snack that requires only a small amount of preparation.  Hummus is one of our top 6 foods every vegan should eat

Making your own homemade hummus is the better option because it will remain healthy and unprocessed. You can also make a big batch and store it in the fridge. A great healthy tip is to start using hummus as a sandwich spread rather than butter or margarine.

For hummus, all you need is a can of chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, and garlic. You can experiment with different flavours by adding in a range of spices and herbs such as ground cumin, turmeric, and curry powder. Red pepper hummus is also a popular choice, and red pepper is extremely high in Vitamin C.

Any leftovers can be placed in a container and kept in the fridge for 3 to 4 days.

Homemade vegetable crisps

Making vegetable crisps at home is a fun and easy way to boost your veg intake. You can use thin strips or even peelings of carrots, beetroot, parsnips and sweet potato.

To make these healthy crisps you need to first wash your vegetables by using a scrubbing brush to remove dirt and residue. Then slice them up by using a mandolin or a slicer on a grater.

Place them on a baking tray and roast until they are crispy. Add salt, pepper, and other spices as desired. It really is that simple and you can make this vegan snack your own.

Roasted peanuts

Peanuts are great to snack on because they contain minerals that are beneficial for the health of your heart. Peanuts are rich in protein, fibre and fat that helps to lower cholesterol. Peanuts also help to drive the hunger away with just a few handfuls.

For this snack, all you need to do is place your shelled peanuts on a baking tray and bake for 15 to 20 minutes until lightly golden. If you prefer, add some spices for a little bit of extra flavour.

Nuts can be moorish, because they are a finger food that can be easily consumed. Try to keep the serving size to 1 ounce (approximately 28 peanuts).

Dark chocolate-coated banana

There’s nothing more satisfying than a healthy snack that also feels like a huge treat. Simply peal the banana and dunk it into some melted vegan chocolate and enjoy!

Dark chocolate is the healthier choice and one you will be thankful for making in the long run. That's because it includes tryptophan, an amino acid that assists our body in producing serotonin, a well-known mood lifter.
