      What is Hops Extract?

Hops, the flowers of a tall, climbing plant (Humulus lupulus) are most well-known for being the flavouring agent in beer production. What is less well known is that, throughout the middle ages, as Hops were being used to produce beer they were also being used to treat various health conditions. Today, nutritionists are increasingly aware of these health-related uses of hops, including relieving menopausal symptoms, supporting cardiovascular conditions and mental health.

Hops contain a variety of biologically active molecules, including phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring compounds in plants that have a similar structure to oestrogen. Some symptoms of menopause are associated with hormonal imbalances and the reduced production of oestrogen. The phytoestrogens in plants like Hops bind to the body’s oestrogen receptors, helping to balance the levels of hormones. This means that Hops may help to relieve symptoms of menopause that result from these hormonal imbalances. Studies suggest that Hops contributes to relieving hot flushes and other discomforts from menopause.

Hops’ traditional use for relaxation has also been increasingly recognised today. Studies have highlighted how hops could be used to treat mild forms of neurological disorders such as anxiety, stress and even depression. The hormonal imbalances of menopause are associated with these symptoms and others like mood swings.
