L-glycine is an amino acid found in protein-rich foods including meat, fish, dairy and legumes. Numerous studies show L-glycine can exert a calming effect on the brain, reducing the time it takes to fall asleep and enhancing sleep quality. It has been researched for its role in contributing to Serotonin levels in the brain and supporting better sleep. L-glycine has also been found to have a regenerative effect on the body, reducing feelings of tiredness during the day.8-9
L-glycine and L-tryptophan work in combination to support the production of neurotransmitters, including serotonin. Serotonin is known to support immune function, relax a busy mind and help protect against fluctuations in mood.
Vegan Nights® includes L-theanine, an amino acid commonly found in black and green tea that has been extensively studied for its effect on sleep disturbances. In combination with Magnesium, L -theanine improves sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep) and sleep duration, even after an intake of caffeine. The combination is thought to do so by improving slow brain waves and regulating brain electrical activity. This supports an improvement in sleep quality, as more time is spent during the ‘deep sleep’ phase, where the body goes into a complete, unresponsive state of unconsciousness. Most of us spend about 20% of our time in deep sleep, but there are ways you can help increase deep sleep, including making some dietary changes or having a relaxing, warm bath before bed. Learn more in ‘How your diet can help your sleep’.
Insomnia, stress and ageing can all affect the duration of deep sleep. The combination of L-theanine and Magnesium has been shown to help increase the levels of the neurotransmitters Serotonin and GABA, both of which are involved in bringing the body into a state of calm and relaxation.14-15
