What is Schisandra Berry?

Schisandra is a vine-like plant that produces purple-red berries. The berries contain lignans which are the active component and the reason Schisandra is increasingly used as a supplement. The lignans, which are the bioactive compounds, are categorised into 'Schisandrin's A, B & C'. They give Schisandrin adaptogenic qualities, meaning it helps regulate pathways in the body, increasing your body's resistance to stress, and your physical endurance and energy.

Schisandra is studied for helping to manage stress and anxiety by regulating the response of the adrenal glands that produce adrenaline and cortisol (stress hormones). Over-productive glands can lead to trouble sleeping and an inability to relax, whilst under-performing glands can lead to fatigue and low energy. Through balancing the hormones, one study has shown that Schisandra significantly reduced mild stress, and resulted in it helping with conditions like fatigue and cognitive impairment.

The health benefits of Schisandra also make it a popular choice for treating the symptoms of menopause such as night sweats, mood instability and memory loss. Discover the ‘12 most common symptoms of menopause’.
