Is gut health and erectile dysfunction linked?

erectile dysfunction and gut health

Erectile dysfunction, or impotence, is when a man isn't able to keep an erection. Erectile problems are far more common than people may think and are usually nothing to be concerned about. In fact, 40% of men in their 40's experience erectile dysfunction at some point, and this increases with age, with 70% of men over 70 also experiencing this.

DR.VEGAN® nutritionist, Ariella Kaur Maan, delves into the impact that gut health can have on erectile dysfunction and what you can do to support your gut health with the help of nutrition and supplements.

How are gut health and ED linked?

Gut health and erectile dysfunction (ED) are connected through several pathways. The gut microbiome directly impacts overall health, including inflammation, hormone regulation, and vascular health—all of which influence sexual function. Imbalances in the gut microbiota (dysbiosis) may trigger an increase in systemic inflammation. Systemic inflammation is linked to endothelial dysfunction and reduced blood flow, one of the causative factors in ED. Gut health affects the balance of hormones like testosterone and nitric oxide, both of which are essential for erectile function. Poor gut health can also significantly impact mental health, as gut-brain axis dysfunction may contribute to anxiety, stress, and depression, which are common psychological factors in ED.

Can gut health regulate ED?

Improving gut health may help regulate ED by reducing inflammation, enhancing blood flow, and supporting hormone balance. A healthy gut microbiome promotes the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate, which have anti-inflammatory effects and help maintain endothelial function. Improving blood flow, reducing systemic inflammation, and improving gut health may help restore normal erectile function. Furthermore, a balanced gut can optimise the production of serotonin, dopamine, and other neurotransmitters. A large proportion of these neurotransmitters are produced in the gut. These affect mood and stress levels, indirectly improving ED symptoms. Learn 6 signs of an unhealthy gut and how to look after your gut through your diet.

Can probiotics help?

Probiotics can support gut health by restoring a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria, which may support vascular health and improve hormonal regulation. Studies show certain probiotic strains can help lower systemic inflammation and support the gut-brain axis, which might positively influence erectile function. Probiotics may also contribute to overall cardiovascular health. They lower cholesterol levels and support blood vessel function, essential for ED management.

Are there foods that are bad for ED that should be avoided?

Yes, certain foods can negatively impact erectile function. A diet with a high content of saturated fats, added sugars, and refined carbohydrates can promote inflammation, contribute to poor cardiovascular health, and lead to weight gain. Obesity is a risk factor for ED. Excessive alcohol intake and highly processed foods with artificial additives may also disrupt the gut microbiome, further worsening ED. It's best to avoid fried foods, added sugars, ultra-processed foods, and dairy milk, as they can impair blood flow and contribute to both gut and vascular issues related to ED.
