Carole's journey: From postnatal depression to menopause

Motherhood and menopause can bring on profound changes in a women's life. The journey can often include a range of physical and emotional changes, and for Carole, it was anything but smooth. We chatted to Carole about her struggles with postnatal depression and her journey through the menopause.
Carole's story
Postnatal depression
Carole's journey began with postnatal depression, an experience she faced when her second daughter was born. During that time, discussing mental health issues like postnatal depression was considered taboo, and support systems were scarce. The diagnosis came at a time when she was focused on being a mum and unaware of her mental state. She recalls being prescribed antidepressants, or 'happy pills.' Despite being on this medication for many years, Carole noted that no healthcare provider has ever initiated a conversation about weaning off these medications or exploring alternative treatments. She mentions the response is usually, "oh, she's alright, she'll keep on them."
Despite raising two young children at this time, she received little understanding from her family, who expected her to merely be happy as a new mother. Carole's experience reflects a broader societal misunderstanding of postnatal depression, where symptoms of depression were often mistaken for everyday sadness.
Finding support through the menopause
Fast forward to Carole's present-day struggles with menopause. While other doctors quickly recommended hormone replacement therapy (HRT), she was fortunate to find a supportive GP who offered a listening ear and respected Carole's preferences for non-medical interventions.
Carole emphasises the need for healthcare providers to be better educated about menopause, as many GPs lack the understanding necessary to truly support women going through it. She found solace in products like MenoFriend®, "I have come off all HRT and found MenoFriend®. It's been amazing. My hot sweats have stopped, and my brain fog is cleared. I feel amazing. I'm fortunate that I've stumbled across that because it's just changed my life."

Improving women's healthcare
Carole believes significant strides have been made in supporting women, particularly in workplaces where menopausal symptoms are increasingly recognised. However, she advocates for more conversations and research on women’s health issues like menopause. Carole stressed the importance of making knowledge and support more accessible outside of specialised centers, arguing for comprehensive education within GP practices.
Key takeaway
Carole’s journey shines a light on the evolution of women’s healthcare, from the lack of understanding in her postnatal years to the growing recognition of menopausal challenges today. By sharing her story, Carole hopes to contribute to a future where women’s health issues are no longer shrouded in silence or misunderstanding but are acknowledged and supported with empathy and knowledge.
