The shocking reality of prostate health in the UK

The shocking reality of prostate health in the UK

Men’s health is gaining attention in the UK, especially in areas like mental health and wellness, but one critical topic remains under-discussed: prostate health. To help address this gap, DR.VEGAN® surveyed 355 men to uncover their thoughts and identify what needs to change*. The results were eye-opening.

Our survey findings have not been influenced or verified by any external organisations or third-party entities.

Understanding the prostate

Surprisingly, 31% of men surveyed admitted they didn’t understand what the prostate was or what it's role is in the body. This lack of awareness uncovers why many overlook the health risks associated with this vital gland for men.

What is the prostate?

The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland located below the bladder and behind the penis. Its primary function is to produce a thick fluid that mixes with sperm to create semen. Despite its essential role in the body, our survey shows that awareness among men of their prostate's overall health remains low, and that there is more that can be done to educate men.

The prevalence of prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is one of the most significant health concerns for men, particularly those over 40. In fact, 52,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. The statistics around prostate cancer are stark:

  • 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
  • For men with a family history of the disease or those of black ethnicity, the risk rises to 1 in 4.

Alarmingly, two-thirds of men surveyed were unaware of these risks. This highlights a critical need for greater education and awareness of prostate cancer and who is at risk.

Recognising the signs and symptoms

When it comes to prostate cancer, early detection is crucial. However, the survey revealed:

  • Over 25% of men didn’t know the signs and symptoms to watch out for.
  • Among men aged 50 or older (who are eligible for a free PSA test through the NHS), nearly a third had not had their prostate checked.

This lack of action is concerning, as symptoms often appear only in advanced stages of the disease, and particularly given Government guidelines that all men over 50 should have their prostate checked. It is vital that men of all ages, and especially over 50, are getting their prostate checked regularly, before it is too late.

Key symptoms to look out for include:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination
  • Weak or interrupted urine flow
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Unexplained back, hip, or pelvic pain

Men in high-risk groups or experiencing these symptoms should speak with their GP and consider early testing.

Lifestyle and diet support

The good news? Although this survey has uncovered some alarming stats around the lack of education and awareness around prostate health, there are many steps men can take to support their prostate health and reduce their risk of prostate cancer. However, almost 90% of men surveyed didn’t know what these steps were.

A healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, can make a significant difference.
