What is Reishi Mushroom?

Reishi mushroom, also known as 'Ganoderma Lucidum', belongs to the fungus kingdom and is native to China. It is a large, dark mushroom that can grow up to 20cm (8 inches) in diameter, with a woody texture and glossy red-brown appearance. The mushroom typically grows on decaying hardwood trees in the temperate forests of Asia, America and Europe. 

Traditionally used for over 2000 years, Reishi mushrooms contain a host of biologically active compounds including polysaccharides, alkaloids, triterpenoids, sterols and ergosterols and proteins among many other compounds. 

Studies show that polysaccharides may exert ‘antioxidant activity’, supporting cellular health by protecting cells from free radical damage and oxidative stress. This can also explain their benefits for protecting liver health. Clinical studies show polysaccharides exert blood glucose lowering and immunomodulatory effects. Beta-glucans, in particular, are those that have an effect on innate immune function and immune regulation through a multitude of mechanisms. This is why Reishi is thought to support the body’s natural defences against pathogens such as bacteria and viruses.

The active triterpenoids from Reishi exert anti-inflammatory effects as they regulate certain pathways and suppress the release of inflammatory markers. Triterpenoids have been clinically shown to help lower high blood pressure, and cholesterol markers as well as have anti histaminic activity.
