What is Burdock?

The Burdock plant is found throughout Europe and Asia and is most famous for being the inspiration for velcro, on account of the clinging hooks on the burs that attach to animal fur. But there are many more exciting reasons to know about Burdock than velcro; it’s a health powerhouse that is most commonly used today as a diuretic and digestive aid.

Burdock is taken to stimulate the production of digestive juices which support the digestion and breakdown of foods. Having the right level of digestive juices can also correct any microbiome imbalances in the gut. This is important because our gut microbiome, the ecosystem of millions of microorganisms in our gut, is crucial to a range of other bodily processes including brain function. Burdock contains Inulin, an important prebiotic that acts as fibrous food for these bacteria and fungi and allows them to help with a range of digestive processes.

Burdock can also act as a detoxifying substance. As a diuretic, it helps flush out toxins from the body in our urine. You may also be interested in reading ‘5 signs your liver needs a detox’.
