What is Boron?
Boron is an important element found in fruits and vegetables, however, the mineral content is dependent on the quality of the soil. If the soil contains adequate levels of Boron, then fruits and vegetables will provide the primary sources of the mineral. Although the body does not need much Boron, it is still important to consume sufficient amounts in your diet given the valuable role Boron plays in the health of joints and bones.
Boron is not considered an ’essential mineral’ according to the nutritional guidelines, but it is important to note that low Boron status can result in impaired bone health, brain function and immune response.
Evidence shows the need for Boron in the body’s absorption of calcium and for protecting against calcium loss, which may also enhance oestrogen activity in bone. It is also useful to consider Boron in situations where calcium loss and bone demineralisation is more prevalent, such as when women are menopausal, or when men and women naturally age.
In peri and post-menopausal women, supplementation with Boron has shown to reduce the urinary excretion of both calcium and magnesium, and to increase calcium absorption. Boron also impacts on Vitamin D utilisation, and studies show supplementation with Boron stimulates bone growth.
